Cat 6 cabling is backward compatible with the Cat 5 and Cat 5e standards that preceded it. They can accommodate 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections over a limited distance— feet for a single cable. With the higher performance, Cat 6a cables generally cost more than Cat 6, and they are slightly thicker. Cat 6a still uses the standard RJ connectors. One eventually became Cat 6.

Like Cat 6, Cat 5e uses a four-wire pair signaling scheme to achieve its data throughput rates. In contrast, Cat 5 cables contain four wire pairs but only uses two of the pairs.

What Do Hurricane Categories Actually Mean?

Because it became available on the market sooner and offered acceptable performance for Gigabit Ethernet at a more affordable price point, Cat 5e became a popular choice for wired Ethernet installations.

This value proposition, along with the relatively slow transition of the industry to 10 Gigabit Ethernet, significantly slowed the adoption of Cat 6. Cat 6 costs more than Cat 5e, so many buyers choose Cat 5e over Cat 6. Eventually, as 10 Gigabit Ethernet speeds become more widely available, users may need to upgrade to Cat 6 or Cat 6a to take full advantage of these higher speeds. Cat 6 cabling supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections, but not at this full distance.

In addition to its support for higher performance than the Cat 5 specification, the Cat 6 standard also includes more stringent specifications for crosstalk and system noise. While Cat 6 is expected to supersede both Cat 5 and Cat 5e cabling in the future, all three types of cables continue to be popular for use in network installations. Acceptable Use Policy.T ropical Storm Dorian is expected to bring heavy rains and damaging wind to Puerto Rico on Wednesday before moving back over open water, where it may strengthen into a major hurricane before making landfall along the Southeastern U.

Officials and residents in Puerto Rico, which was devastated by Hurricane Maria inare already bracing for the worst. But the latest forecast indicates that residents in parts of Florida, Georgia, and even South Carolina should start preparing for a major hurricane, too.

Tropical Storm Dorian could become a major hurricane by the time it reaches the U. That means it would be at least a category 3 hurricane, with wind speeds of over miles per hour. But what do meteorologists and news anchors mean when they talk about hurricane categories, like category 1, category 3 or category 5?

Most people simply want to know how much water and wind to expect, and what a hurricane will mean for their safety. The hurricane category scale has evolved over time, but in its current version, it only measures the wind speeds produced by a hurricane. See how the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration breaks down the hurricane category scale here. In a Category 1 hurricane, winds range from 74 to 95 mph.

Falling debris could strike people, livestock and pets, and older mobile homes could be destroyed. Protected glass windows will generally make it through the hurricane without major damage. Frame homes, apartments and shopping centers may experience some damage, and snapped power lines could result in short-term power outages.

Hurricane Dolly in was an example of a Category 1 hurricane that whipped through southern Texas. Hurricane Sandy was also a Category 1 hurricane when it hit Jamaica inbut it weakened before reaching the east coast of the United States. Winds range between 96 and mph during a Category 2 hurricane. There is a bigger risk of injury or death to people, livestock and pets from flying debris.

Older mobile homes will likely be destroyed, and debris can ruin newer mobile homes, too. Frame homes, apartment buildings and shopping centers may see major roof and siding damage, and many trees will be uprooted. Residents should expect near total power loss after a Category 2 hurricane, with outages lasting anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.

In a Category 3 hurricane, winds range from to mph.

category 6

There is a high risk of injury or death to people, livestock and pets from flying and falling debris. Nearly all older mobile homes will be destroyed, and most new ones will experience significant damage.

Even well-built frame homes, apartments and industrial buildings will likely experience major damage, and the storm will uproot many trees that may block roads. Electricity and water will likely be unavailable for several days to a few weeks after the storm.

Prior to making landfall as a Category 3 hurricane, Hurricane Irma was a Category 5 hurricane— the second-strongest Atlantic hurricane on record. During a Category 4 hurricane, winds range from to mph. At these speeds, falling and flying debris poses a very high risk of injury or death to people, pets and livestock. Again, most mobile homes will be destroyed, even newer ones. Some frame homes may totally collapse, while well-built homes will likely see severe damage to their roofs, and apartment buildings can experience damage to upper floors.

A Category 4 hurricane will blow out most windows on high-rise buildings, uproot most trees and will likely down many power lines. Power outages can last for weeks or even months after storms of this level. Water shortages are also common in the aftermath of Category 4 hurricanes, potentially making the affected area uninhabitable for weeks or months. Hurricane Harvey made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane in Texas in August.Post Mar 17, 1 T Post Mar 17, 2 T Post Mar 17, 3 T Post Mar 19, 4 T Post Mar 19, 5 T We've updated our Privacy Policy and by continuing you're agreeing to the updated terms.

For copper-based, twisted-pair networks, the four standards that are in common use today are Category 5, 5e, 6 and 6a. Category 5 is the oldest standard and Category 6a is the newest. Category 5 cabling has been used extensively since the s as the standard cable for 10Base-T and Base-TX networks running at 10 and Mbps, respectively. Category 5 cables have an impedance of Ohms and a bandwidth of MHz. The maximum length of a single cable run is limited to meters, or feet, which is the same for all Category 5 or 6 network cables.

Category 5e cables share all the same basic specifications as Category 5 cables, however it reduces interference caused by crosstalk between the wires inside the cable.

Category 5e cables use all four pairs of conductors, as opposed to the two pairs used to transmit data in 10 or Mbps networks. As a result, a Base-TX network using Category 5e cables can reach a maximum speed of Mbps, although this may be slower in distances over 50 meters.

Category 6 cables replaced Category 5e cables as the preferred cables for BaseTX networks because it could achieve full Mbps network speeds across a full cable length of meters. This is possible because of its increased bandwidth of MHz. Category 6 cables can also be used for 10GBase-T networks, for speeds of up to 10 GBps up to 50 meters.

Category 6a cables are enhanced versions of Category 6 cables, with an increased bandwidth of MHz. Before the Category 6a standard became official, several companies marketed upgraded Category 6 cables as Category 6e cables.

Category 6a is the official standard and its increased bandwidth can be used to achieve Gbps speeds on 10GBase-T networks at the standard meter maximum cable length. All four types of cables are constructed with four pairs of 22 to 24 AWG conductors, with each pair twisted using a different number of turns per meter; this reduces the interference from neighboring pairs.

An outer sheath of PVC for standard cables or fire-resistant plastic for plenum-rated cables covers all four conducting pairs. Category 6a cable is optionally available with a foil shield between the outer sheath and the inner conductors, which reduces outside interference and may increase network performance.
